Miconazole inhibits the enzyme 14-α demethylase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme which converts lanosterol to ergosterol. As ergosterol is an essential component of the cell membrane of the fungus so inhibition of ergosterol prevents te cell walls synthesis.
In case of genital candidiasis the fat present in the cream damages the latex in the condoms and diaphragms so there is no longer protection guaranteed.
